spring

Well, it’s been a while since technology went south. But since then spring-like weather is trying to get its foot in the door. The usual pattern of snow, wind, rain, mud, wind, dust, snow or was that rain; no, it was graupel, wind, rain, thunder, mud, flooding; oh, look hidden duck eggs, warm, cold, rain, mud; naughty yearlings where they shouldn’t be cause they knocked a post over, mud, wind; is that goat limping?, mud, now who’s that in that field?, wind, …. round & round we go. But it is actually getting warmer & nicer. Well, maybe not. It’s just that time of year where we transition from winter to spring.

It is the month of “I hate cows” … well, at least until around the 15th when we should start seeing little calves bouncing around on green grass and cows get let out on range.

No more feeding cows bales of hay and the grass finally growing, God permitting.

Looking forward to it even though that means fence work… there’s always fence work. Especially now when the ground is so soggy-boggy that an itchy cow can easily tip something off to the side or knock it down.

Speaking of which, some folks got a visit from the easter bunny. We got a visit from the easter cow(s). Yes, easter cows(s). Betty, Little Miss Jen & Duchess came to visit. Not only were they caught in the act but their tracks still remain in the mud. Betty says they were helping us find duck eggs but forgot since they noticed the grass was a little tall in places. Obviously we are so busy we are neglecting the weeds lawn. Or maybe it was the allure of the onions sprouting up in the garden. The cows LOVE the wild onions popping up but the ‘domesticated’ onions are coming up, too. The wild onions are almost as popular as alfalfa cubes. Have no idea why, but like humans, it sure gives them bad breath. You can always tell where they’ve been when they come to talk to you…

Signs of spring popping up, like the daffodils which may not make it through the predicted storm but they are pretty. A little grilling outdoors and laundry on the line. The vents in the basement have been opened up and most of the plastic taken off the windows. Got two broody ducks, two broody turkey hens, Sandhill cranes, curlews and snipes all figuring out where they are going to nest, cows are starting to bag up in anticipation of little ones, cow fur decorating the barb wire fencing, and the bulls starting to crest up.

And fat lazy cats enjoying the sunshine…. Umber really is a barn cat, he just doesn’t look like it. Maple is a little embarrassed about his lack of composure.

Still a little too wet for gardening but soon it will dry up as will the 15-minute window to drive a fence post in will disappear. Ah, spring has arrived and soon I’ll be complaining about the heat and the wind. Gotta run, but just checking in.

Until next time…

    1. Not really, more rain than anything resembling snow. The storm that blew thru the last 24 hours gave the mountains some snow but the storm before melted whatever snow was on the lower elevations. Looking like it may be a ‘dry’ year…
